The Globe and Mail Publishes Article on Politicization of Charitable Status
By Terrance S. Carter and Jacqueline M. Demczur Oct 2025 Charity & NFP Law Update
Published on October 30, 2025
The Globe and Mail recently published an article on October 9, 2025 by regular columnist Tim Cestnick highlighting concerns by many within the charitable sector about potential changes in the upcoming Federal Budget that could “politicize the status of being a registered charity.” Cestnick’s commentary referenced the joint letter earlier submitted on September 16, 2025 by 34 charity lawyers from across Canada to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue. As noted in our September 2025 Charity & NFP Law Update, the joint letter was in addition to a letter to Finance by Carter dated August 28, 2025, which raised similar concerns about maintaining a neutral, principles-based framework for the regulation of charities under the Income Tax Act. The Globe and Mail article by Tim Cestnick underscores the continued relevance of these issues to the charitable sector as the federal government prepares to present its upcoming budget. |
